The Day of the Udmurt Language

November 27 is the World Day of the Udmurt Language. On the eve of this holiday, an event of the UdSU Russian-Uzbek Educational and Cultural Center "Language is the soul of the nation" was held at the UdSU Educational and Scientific Library.

The Udmurt language, a Finno-Ugric language, is one of the state languages of the Udmurt Republic that is named after the major indigenous people of the region – the Udmurts.

Udmurt State University is one of the leading educational institutions in the Republic that contributes to the research, preservation and development of the Udmurt language. Our university is the unique place for those language learners all over the world that are interested in studying less popular languages, the Udmurt language in particular. For over 20 years UdSU has attracted lovers of minor languages to participate in the annual summer school of the Udmurt language and culture.

According to the programme of the event, dedicated to the celebration of the Udmurt Language, Rector of Udmurt State University Galina Merzlyakova, Head of the UdSU International Relations Office Maria Beznosova, Deputy Minister of National Policy of the Udmurt Republic Alexander Filatov, First Secretary of the Consulate General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Kazan Kamol Davronov delivered official welcoming speeches.

Students of the UdSU Institute of the Udmurt Philology, Finno-Ugrian Studies and Journalism read poems of the Udmurt poets, the folklore and ethnographic ensemble "Chipchirgan" performed Udmurt songs and presented various types of the Udmurt national constume. Also a linguistic quiz on the differences and similarities of the Udmurt and Uzbek languages was held at the event and students of Urgench State University and Namangan State University delivered their performances to congratulate UdSU on the Day.
